The 17 hospitals

Guangzhou's designated international medical service hospitals, in one place. Each entry covers what the hospital is known for, how its international department actually works, and what language support to expect.

Sun Yat-sen University · Yuexiu

Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center

A cancer-only hospital and one of the country's first national cancer regional medical centres. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is its own department, supported by radiation oncology and thoracic, hepatobiliary and breast surgery. The International Medical Centre has separate consulting rooms and wards, with a dual-attending model for inpatients; hospital documents are in Chinese only, so interpretation and translation are arranged separately.

Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center logo
Sun Yat-sen University · Tianhe

Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center

A dedicated eye hospital and the base of China's State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology. Cataract, retina, cornea, glaucoma and refractive surgery each run as their own department, with a high day-surgery rate and short waits for the operating list. Its international medical department handles overseas patients, though reports are issued in Chinese and interpretation must be booked.

The First Affiliated Hospital logo
Sun Yat-sen University · Yuexiu / Nansha

The First Affiliated Hospital

The largest comprehensive hospital in South China, with 36 national key clinical specialties at its own count. Hepatobiliary surgery — including a “no-ischaemia” technique written into international guidance — alongside nephrology and general surgery. Its international medical centre draws on the whole hospital's specialists and has treated patients from more than 40 countries.

Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital logo
Sun Yat-sen University · Yuexiu

Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital

Founded in 1835 as the first Western-medicine hospital in China. Urology and breast oncology are the headline departments, with a strong cervical spine service alongside. Its international department includes specialists who trained at Harvard and runs remote consultations with Cardiff University; a dedicated overseas-patient desk supports the visit.

The Third Affiliated Hospital logo
Sun Yat-sen University · Tianhe

The Third Affiliated Hospital

A national health commission hospital known for liver disease and hepatobiliary surgery, including complex paediatric cases. Neurology and child developmental behaviour — autism and ADHD in particular — are the other two pillars. Its international medical centre accepts self-paying patients and can arrange interpretation on request.

The Sixth Affiliated Hospital logo
Sun Yat-sen University · Tianhe

The Sixth Affiliated Hospital

Known for colorectal surgery and inflammatory bowel disease, at a volume the hospital puts at around 8,600 colorectal cancer operations a year. It runs a dedicated international medical department with a multilingual team. Overseas and Hong Kong/Macao patient visits passed 11,000 in 2025.

Hospital of Stomatology logo
Sun Yat-sen University · Yuexiu

Hospital of Stomatology

A specialist dental hospital covering orthodontics, implants, endodontics and oral-maxillofacial surgery. Oral-maxillofacial surgery runs at over 5,500 operations a year by its own figure, with microsurgical reconstruction as a strength. A dedicated international dental centre operates at the Tianhe campus; dental records and imaging are in Chinese.

Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital logo
Provincial · Yuexiu

Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital

A provincial general hospital whose cardiovascular programme is its signature, covering interventional cardiology and cardiac surgery. Its international medical platform was modelled on Hong Kong private-hospital service and reports patients from more than 150 countries. Interpretation, appointment handling and cross-border payment support are available through that channel.

Guangdong Women and Children Hospital logo

Guangdong Women and Children Hospital

A provincial women's and children's hospital with national key specialties in neonatology, obstetrics, gynaecology and paediatric critical care. Prenatal diagnosis and fetal medicine are the referral strengths, and there is a collaboration with Boston Children's Hospital. An international medical department takes bookings, though most clinical documents are Chinese-only.

Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine

The largest traditional Chinese medicine hospital in the province and one of the biggest in China. Acupuncture, respiratory care and breast disease are the strengths, with more than 300 traditional therapies in use. Its international department has served over 3,000 overseas patients in two years.

The First Affiliated Hospital of GMU logo
Guangzhou Medical University · Liwan

The First Affiliated Hospital of GMU

The respiratory centre of the national system — it hosts the National Respiratory Center — with thoracic surgery alongside. The team is known for “tubeless” thoracic surgery, which avoids intubation and post-operative drains. A Hengqin international centre serves Hong Kong, Macao and overseas patients.

Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center

Upgraded to a National Children's Medical Center in May 2026, and the largest women's and children's hospital in South China. Guangzhou First People's Hospital

Founded in 1899, one of Guangzhou's oldest hospitals. Haematology — with one of the province's largest stem-cell transplant programmes — and gastroenterology are the core departments. Oncology, orthopaedics, rehabilitation and TCM are the main services, with 24 operating theatres and robotic laparoscopic systems. It provides multilingual interpretation.

How we narrow it down

Seventeen is a shortlist, not an answer.

Does the department do it at volume?

Fifty cases a year and five thousand are not the same thing.

Is there a real international pathway?

A pilot designation does not cover every department. We confirm the department.

What is the realistic wait?

Weeks versus months changes your plan more than a name does.

Why Guangzhou

The case for Guangzhou is not one famous hospital. It is density plus depth: enough hospitals close together to compare, and a few specialties where case volume here is unusually high.

17 of the province's 25

Guangdong designated 25 international hospitals in 2026; 17 are in Guangzhou, across five university systems, all inside one metro map. Getting two opinions in a week is logistically possible here in a way it is not in most cities.

Arrival is not the hard part

Baiyun is a direct-flight hub for Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Europe, and the 240-hour visa-free transit applies here. Over three million foreign arrivals passed through the airport in 2025.

What the city is actually known for

01

Respiratory medicine

The National Respiratory Center is based here, at the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University — with "tubeless" thoracic surgery and a dedicated thoracic unit alongside it.

02

Cancer

Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center is one of the country's first national cancer regional medical centres. Guangdong is also a high-incidence region for nasopharyngeal carcinoma, so case volume here is unusually large — large enough that it runs as a standalone department.

03

Ophthalmology

The State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology sits inside a dedicated eye hospital, not an eye department — cataract, retina, cornea and refractive work each have their own unit.

04

Paediatrics

In May 2026 the national health commission upgraded Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center from a regional centre to a National Children's Medical Center. It holds eight national key clinical specialties, including paediatric surgery and obstetrics.

Where Guangzhou is not the answer
If your case turns on a very specific clinical trial, a rare paediatric procedure, or a surgeon who only operates in one place, Beijing and Shanghai sometimes have more of it. We will say so before you book anything — including when the right answer is to stay home.

Where the hospitals actually are

Most of the 17 sit in three central districts. If you are coming for one consultation, stay within walking distance of it. If you are comparing two hospitals, stay between them.

How long you actually need in Guangzhou depends on the work-up: a cataract assessment and a three-week radiotherapy course are different trips. The written opinion gives you a realistic window before you book anything — and where you stay follows the hospital you will actually be going to, not a neighbourhood we picked in advance.

Districts follow the provincial pilot list; campus locations change, so confirm the exact address for your appointment.
